How to Get Back into Kickboxing Training After a Long Break

Whether you’ve had a hectic work schedule, young children to look after or you simply lost motivation for a while, having a break from training is common for people of all ages. For many, the idea of returning to a training regime after a long break is daunting, but there’s a few things you can do to get back into it and ensure you end up sticking to your fitness goals. Integrated Combat Centre is a trusted choice for kickboxing training; Lewisham and Clemton Park locals can rely on us for high quality training programs whether starting out or getting back into it. Here’s a few of our tips to make the transition back into regular training a little bit easier.

Ease Yourself Back into a Routine

Getting back into the swing of training again can take a while. Take it easy at first, it will take a little time to rebuild your strength, cardio and endurance. Don’t expect to go flat out for the first few weeks, it’s likely that you’ll get burned out easily and may even cause yourself an injury. It’s important to understand that you won’t be in the exact same position that you were before your break, but be confident that you can return over time if you put in the hard work.

Make a Commitment to Yourself

One of the hardest things about returning to training is making it a habit. Feeling discouraged at times is only natural, so it’s important to make a commitment to yourself to attend training sessions a couple of times a week (or whatever you can realistically do) for at least a month. This commitment gives you less of a chance to back out and push through even when it seems difficult. After a little while, you will find that the force of habit will return and you will be craving the endorphins that come from a solid training session.

Set Goals

Setting goals will motivate you through your return to training and any rough patches you may find yourself going through in the early stages. Have a few short term goals as well as a long term goal to really keep you motivated. Whether it’s re-learning a certain move, mastering a new technique or physical goals such as losing weight or being able to spar for a certain period of time – setting goals will keep you focused when you feel like giving up.

Be Patient

As the old saying goes, patience is a virtue. Don’t rush the journey, you need to take it one day at a time. Make sure your expectations are realistic, it’s going to take time to become the athlete you once were, but it doesn’t mean you won’t get there again. If you are patient, you’ll get to where you want to be soon enough.

Reward Yourself Occasionally

Positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to encourage yourself along your training journey. A little reward here and there for achieving a goal or sticking to your new routine is great motivation to stay on track. Whether it’s allowing yourself a cheat meal, that new pair of runners you have been eyeing off or treating yourself to a weekend getaway for all your recent hard work, rewarding yourself for a goal you’ve accomplished will no doubt keep you going.

Going back to training after a hiatus may be hard, but it can definitely be done. Whether you trained in martial arts years ago or you have just decided to take it up, well done for making the decision to improve your health, fitness and overall wellbeing!
