How to Prepare for Your First Kickboxing Class

So, you’re looking to improve your fitness and learn a new skill and you have booked yourself into a kickboxing class, now what? What should you bring your first class and what can you do to prepare yourself? At ICC, we are Sydney’s leading martial arts training academy offering BJJ, kickboxing and MMA classes to kids and adults of all ages and abilities. Here are a few tips that might help you get the most out of your first class.

Drink lots of water before, during and after your class

Kickboxing workouts engage your entire body, as well your mind so be prepared to output a lot of energy. Bring a large water bottle to help you stay hydrated between rounds and keep you going throughout the class. Drinking water will also help with your recovery post-workout.

Wear appropriate clothing

Even at a beginner level, expect to sweat. A lot. Bring a small towel, sweatband, wristband, etc. to keep the dripping sweat in check. Loose clothing is not recommended, instead opt for tighter active wear to maximize your freedom of movement and minimize the chance of getting caught in your own clothes.

Invest in hand wraps and gloves

While wrapping up your hands may look professional, they aren’t just for the experts. When you are punching repeatedly, hand wraps provide support and protection. Most gyms and training centres will have communal wraps you can borrow, however it’s much nicer and more hygienic to have your own. Same goes for gloves and thankfully they are easy to find at most sports stores, or even online.

Bring the right attitude and don’t be intimidated

More than anything, it’s important to enter your first class with confidence. Leave your insecurities at home and don’t doubt yourself. Think strong and act strong. Walk into that class ready to work and challenge yourself. Remember that everyone had their first martial arts class at some point, too.

There’s often a sense of community in boxing classes that can be really motivating, everyone is working together to achieve their goals, learning from each other and growing together. The instructor will help you push yourself so you can feel confident about progressing quickly, but you can rest assured you’re not going to feel like an amateur in a class full of professionals.

Prepare to get addicted

Kickboxing classes provide a full-on, whole body workout, but they also teach you techniques that have helped fighters get trained for decades. Not only will you learn basic kickboxing, but also Muay Thai boxing skills and combinations meaning you can use fists, feet, elbows and knees to fight. The result is that you’ll develop great overall fitness in a fun and supportive environment that will carry over into the next class and the next – kickboxing is highly addictive.

Martial arts and kickboxing classes have numerous benefits, including stress relief, increased balance, and improved coordination and overall fitness. Importantly you can expect to have fun, build friendships and take out some frustrations while getting your body into its best shape possible.
